Hosea 9:10 describes God's relationship with Israel in the early stages. "When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your fathers, it was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree." Grapes in the desert are unusual, and thus a special delight when found. Early figs are considered especially delicious. In those early days, God delighted in Israel.
